What is Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

✔ Total Shoulder Replacement (TSR): Both the ball (humeral head) and socket (glenoid) are replaced. This is ideal for patients with severe arthritis.
✔ Hemiarthroplasty: Only the ball (humeral head) is replaced if the socket remains healthy.
The decision between total shoulder replacement and hemiarthroplasty may be finalized during surgery based on the condition of the joint.
How is the Surgery Performed?
1️⃣ An incision is made at the front of the shoulder.
2️⃣ The damaged humeral head (ball) is removed and replaced with a metal implant (titanium or cobalt chrome).
3️⃣ If needed, the glenoid (socket) is resurfaced and fitted with a plastic (polyethylene) implant.
4️⃣ The new artificial joint is secured in place, allowing smooth, pain-free movement.
Recovery & Rehabilitation
After surgery, most patients start gentle movements under guidance. Physiotherapy is crucial for regaining strength and mobility. Initially, a sling is used for support, followed by gradual exercises to restore function.
